October Is Upon Us – BEWARE!

October is a scary month.  We’re not talking ghosts, goblins, or zombies.  Nope, there are scarier things happening in October.  Things like:

·       The end of the first quarter marking period (Oct. 28 in Fairfax County)

·       Preparing college essays and applications

·       The omnipresent fear that your children are struggling, and you don’t know how to help

Ghosts, goblins, and zombies may not be real (well, ghosts maybe, but that’s another blog for another day) – but the school struggle is real and that we can help with.

How was the first quarter?

What trends did you notice with your child during this first quarter?  Were assignments chunked out and completed on time without constant monitoring and nagging?  Does your child have an established study routine?  Did any of these habits contribute (positively or negatively) to their grades during the first quarter?

If any of the above issues have been concerning, it may be time to consider getting some support.  Even a dismal first quarter performance can be turned around to become a successful year overall once the right strategies are in place.  These can include:

·       The use of planning materials which allow for greater classroom success

·       Learning to time-manage work and understand how to fit everything into a day

·       Determining organizational systems that actually work

·       Learning the importance of self-advocacy

·       Learning study strategies and skills that best match individual learning styles.

Our Executive Function weekly coaching focuses on all of these and more.  Learn more here: https://www.essigeducationgroup.com/executive-function-coaching#k12weeklycoaching

Is this your child’s senior year?

October is when the college application process swings into full gear.  Is your student an organized senior who used their time over the summer to write college application essays and narrow down their search?  If so, congratulations!  If not, good news – we offer two college essay writing programs!

What we can do:

·       Help your student understand what is expected of a personal narrative, and how it differs from other types of essay writing

·       Offer support through the writing and editing process, including reviewing notes prior to scheduled zoom sessions

·       Personalize support with an 8-week ongoing coaching program, or a 2-hour bootcamp with an edit of the student’s final draft at a later date

What we won’t do:

·       We won’t write your child’s essay for them

·       We won’t change their individual style or experiences – rather, we will help them find their own unique and compelling voice

Our College Essay Writing programs have been extended into the fall.  Learn more here: https://www.essigeducationgroup.com/college-essay-writing

Is the idea of college scarier than it should be?

It takes more than good grades in high school to lay the foundation for success in college.  Are you worried that your child isn’t ready for the leap to independence that college requires?  Is your student anxious and overly stressed about the idea of post-secondary education?  While continuing with the college application process, it could be beneficial to also consider gap year options.  Are you aware of the various options available, and how to determine a good fit?  We can help navigate post-secondary options other than moving straight to college with our new Gap Year Consulting.  Learn more here: https://www.essigeducationgroup.com/gap-year-consulting
